Fair Housing Month Annual Event

The City of Albany and its partners announce the Annual Fair Housing event Thursday, April 4, 2019 at the Albany James H. Gray, Sr. Civic Center. Mayor Dorothy Hubbard and County Commission Chair, Christopher Cohilas, will kickoff the Fair Housing event by signing a proclamation supporting the Fair Housing Act and the City’s initiatives at 3:45, followed by a Fair Housing Conference with Regional City & County officials.

The Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination in housing sales, rentals, and financing based on race, color, national origin and religion. It also imposes Affirmative Furthering Fair Housing requirements on agencies that receive federal awards such as CDBG and HOME funds as these programs strengthen the local economy creating jobs and offering a safety net to the most vulnerable households. The Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) is striving to combat unfair practices and unwarranted burdens that families are facing, by bringing greater awareness to National Fair Housing Month through education and outreach.

The public is invited to attend the conference starting at 5:00 pm, and discussions will include Fair Housing regulations, landlord/tenant rights and responsibilities, and local building codes. There will be housing counselors, mortgage lenders, realtors, vendors, and other housing industry professionals, in attendance, who will be available to assist individuals and provide additional information.

Fair Housing - It’s not an option. It’s the law!
