Municipal Court is a misdemeanor court that has jurisdiction over city ordinance violations and state traffic offenses. Specific type cases handled by the court include traffic offenses; driving under the influence of alcohol; possession and consumption by a minor; possession of marijuana less than an ounce; firearms violations; nuisance and abatement cases; and animal control citations.
Arraignments are held at the Dougherty County Jail Facility at 7:30 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for citizens who are in the custody of the jail. Arraignments and bench trials are held at the Dougherty County Judicial building Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday beginning at 9:00 a.m. or as soon as arraignments at the jail are completed. The court also is responsible for entering case dispositions and forwarding entries to the Department of Driver Services.
The Office of the Municipal Court will no longer accept cash, including coins, as a form of payment under any circumstances effective Monday, March 9, 2020. Cash payments will continue to be accepted through the close of business on Friday, March 6, 2020. Acceptable forms of payment will include credit/debit cards, money orders, and cashier’s checks (no personal checks).
Mission
The Municipal Court's mission is to adjudicate cases fairly and to make every effort to provide the highest dependable customer service with professionalism, when dealing with departments within the City, elected officials, judges, attorneys and the general public.
Chief Municipal Court Judge
Willie C. Weaver, Sr. is a graduate of Mercer University with a B.A. in Political Science, a minor in Religion, and a Juris Doctorate. He was previously elected to the Dougherty County School Board, District 3 in 2002. He also served as Chairman of the School Board.
Mr. Weaver is a member of the Georgia Bar Association, Georgia Municipal Court Association and District Representative, Association of Trial Lawyers of America, Board of Directors of Georgia Alliance of African-American Attorneys, Who's Who in American Law, National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, Georgia Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and a member of the Dougherty Circuit, Georgia, and American Bar Associations. He is Past President of the C. B. King Bar Association. Judge Weaver is a member of the Greater Second Mount Olive Baptist Church.
