There is basically three ways to become a firefighter in the state of Georgia. To begin with an individual can attend one of the state technical college fire science programs. Upon the successful completion of the program as a certified firefighter one is eligible to be hired as a firefighter.

Another route that one can take is that of going to the state academy in Forsyth for the eight week certification program. Once again upon completion of this program an individual is eligible to be hired as a certified firefighter.

Finally there are recruit schools put on by the department from time to time usually for approximately 12 twelve weeks. Upon completion of the recruit school; if a candidate passes all their exams and state test, they can become certified. Usually individuals who apply directly to the City of Albany Fire Department if chosen are a part of this direct streamlined process.

The department allows individuals from other states who are National Professional Qualified to apply also, since they have proven knowledge, skills, and ability.
