About the Citizen's Police Academy

The Citizens Police Academy is an opportunity for participants in the CPA to learn more about a variety of topics including Investigations, Patrol, Gang Awareness, 9-11 Communications, Crime Scene Evidence Collection, Firearms Training, and much more.

The Albany Police Department Citizen's Academy (APDCA) is an effort of the Albany Police Department to advance the knowledge and understanding of our community in regards to the functions, training, and operations of the police department.

The training sessions have three objectives. First, they will provide an understanding of the functions of the police department and how the department interacts with the Criminal Justice System. Secondly, citizens will learn how the Albany Police Department responds to the needs of the community through Community Oriented Policing. Finally, citizens will have "hands-on" training in areas that the police department utilizes in solving crimes.

After the completion of each of the twelve (12) sessions, each participant will graduate and receive a diploma from the APDCPA. Every participant will not be ready to wear a uniform and work as a police officer, but the Department hopes that each person will have a better understanding of what crime is; the role of police officers in problem-solving; and, the relationship between the community and the police in solving a crime.
